The European Union said on Tuesday it regretted China's adoption of a Hong Kong security law, which it warned would undermine its autonomy and undermine the judiciary.

"We are sorry for this decision," European Council President Charles Michel said at a press conference.

"This law risks seriously undermining the high degree of autonomy in Hong Kong and having a detrimental effect on the judiciary and the rule of law," Michel said in comments repeated by European Commission leader Ursula von der Leyen.
